India Democratic Education Conference 2019 brings together individuals, schools, learning organisations, those concerned about appropriate learning spaces available for children, education departments, universities along with a range of children, young people, parents and educators.
The IDEC – International Democratic Education Conference – initiated by a group of educators, celebrated its 25th edition in Bangalore, India in November 2018. From IDEC, regional offshoots were started to meet more regularly and to reach out to more people in the local area. EUDEC was started for Europe; APDEC for Asia-Pacific countries, with India being a part of it; and country-specific DECs, of which InDEC is for India.
Though the regional conferences are broadly meant for people from that region, interested people from all over the world may participate, if they want to. InDEC too, may have its share of people coming from other countries.
Along with the 25th IDEC in Bangalore last year, the 3rd APDEC and the 1st InDEC were organised. Participants came from 20-25 countries, with about 150 children & young people and 250 adults. It was a celebration of democracy as part of one’s natural living day. View IDEC APDEC InDEC 2018 photos
What brings everyone to this arena is perhaps the need to explore, to question, to resolve, to find processes and ways for living and learning in a human way for the young of our species and for the generation on its way into the future.
Democracy is not a choice.
India is a democratic country and all elements of it need to be democratic, if the country as a whole is to be and become truly democratic.
The aim of the Conference is to bring people together to live, learn and participate, rather than attend with imposed rules and definitions.
Could each participant experience the freedom to make choices?
Could each receive respect?
Could an environment be created where every human being is respected?
Could one work together to understand collaboration?
Could we take on responsibility spontaneously?
Could one listen to each other deeply?
Could we talk to each other?
Could every child, adult, school or organisation share one’s work in their own unique way?
Could we evolve ideas together?
Could we experience simultaneity, rather than duality?
Could we say, not yours and mine, but ours?
Could we respect the ground rules and practices of the community, we are members of, even though temporarily?
Could we be in rhythm with ourselves, with the community and the environment at the same time?
Could we construct together, a democratic culture?
Since 1993, when the first IDEC (International Democratic Education Conference) was planned by representatives from just four schools in different countries, the number of democratic schools all round the world has grown rapidly.
IDECs have been held every year on a different continent, and each conference is attended by hundreds of people from thirty or more different countries. There are also annual conferences held by EUDEC (the European Democratic Education Conference), ADEC (the Australasian Democratic Education Community), APDEC (Asia- Pacific Democratic Education Conference) & InDEC (India Democratic Education Conference).
https://www.idenetwork.org/index.php/about/what-is-idec
During one of the conferences, in New Zealand in 2002, some wanted to arrive at a definition of Democratic Education. It was discussed and in the end it was resolved that by arriving at a definition, one keeps many out of the defined circle; whereas the very idea of democratic education was to include as many as possible in the movement.
DE is a continuum and one needs to locate oneself or the organisation on it and move on to the next stage or layer. It is a process of reflection and action, a cycle that creates its own praxis; with each school or individual continuing to be unique…
IDEC is not an organisation and neither is InDEC. If there is an organisation, a head and a tail are required! It is a Conference and people who are interested, attend and take it forward in their lives and profession. It has its own momentum.
InDEC is for Schools / Colleges / Universities / Any organisation that is interested to incorporate democratic structures or institutions or communities inside and outside India.
InDEC is for regular schools and alternative education programmes
InDEC is for Homeschooling and Non-Schooling communities
InDEC is for anyone who is interested in Democracy as a way of life
The Democratic Education Conference brings together people from a wide range of education experience to share, reflect and evolve
